April business survey index edges up to 93.3

The Business Survey Index (BSI), a survey of the nation's top 600 companies in terms of sales conducted by the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI), stood at 93.3 for April, up a little from 92.1 for the previous month. A BSI reading below the break-even 100 mark means pessimists who are delivering a gloomy prediction of their business outnumber optimists. Still hovering below par for 11th months in a row, their business sentiment is thought to be finally starting to rebound after hitting a trough in February this year.

By sector, readings for investment, inventories and profitability were up, while those for domestic demand, exports and financial conditions and employment fell. By sector, except for financial conditions and employment, all the other figures rose.

"Both corporate confidence and performance have recently improved. Despite adverse factors such as the interest rate hike in the U.S. and mounting protectionism on the international front, the nation's exports have been on the rise since the beginning of this year, showing a sign of recovery," an FKI official explained. "To keep up the recovery momentum, we all need to try to minimize uncertainties which affect our economy."
